Front Door Refinishing by Lance Daniel Aulffo specializes in the conservation and furniture-grade refinishing of historic, antique, and architecturally significant wooden entry doors throughout the Lowcountry and on select regional projects. A fourth-generation refinisher, Aulffo draws upon a family trade dating to 1907 and professional practice since 1994. His proprietary 17-phase process combines careful finish removal, substrate evaluation, custom staining, toning, shading, glazing, and faux-graining to reconcile variations in species, age, repairs, weathering, and previous treatments. Rather than obscuring mismatched or compromised wood beneath heavy coatings, he works to preserve visible grain, depth, and character while restoring visual unity. Projects include historic churches, estate properties, grand residential entryways, and antique architectural elements requiring disciplined, material-sensitive treatment.

COMPANY OVERVIEW
Front Door Refinishing by Lance Daniel Aulffo is an owner-operated specialty craft business based on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The company specializes in furniture-grade refinishing, conservation, and restoration of grand wooden entryways, antique doors, and architecturally significant entrance portals. Aulffo describes himself as a fourth-generation Master Refinisher whose family trade traces to Chieti, Italy, in 1907. He reports beginning family-shop work in 1987, entering the trade full-time in 1992, and establishing his independent refinishing and decorative-painting practice in 1994. The company’s work combines traditional wood-finishing knowledge, decorative finishing, color theory, and a proprietary 17-phase non-abrasive refinishing process developed for demanding architectural woodwork and exterior exposure.

- Careful reconciliation of differing wood species, replacement boards, repairs, weathered areas, and earlier interventions
- Use of toning, shading, glazing, and faux-graining where visual integration cannot be achieved through conventional staining alone
- Preservation of visible grain, depth, aged character, and material variation while restoring greater visual coherence
- Corrective refinishing of doors obscured or compromised by previous heavy stains, coatings, or inappropriate finish treatments
- Adaptation of exterior finishing methods to ultraviolet exposure, humidity, heat, and salt-air conditions common to the South Carolina Lowcountry
- Maintenance coatings intended to extend service life and reduce the need for repeated complete refinishing
17-PHASE REFINISHING PROCESS
The company’s principal methodology is a proprietary 17-phase refinishing process developed for wood entry doors and related architectural elements. The process is described as non-abrasive in its overall approach and is intended to remove deteriorated finishes, reveal the actual condition and character of the underlying wood, address substrate and color inconsistencies, and rebuild the finish through individually selected staining, toning, glazing, shading, and protective coating procedures. Much of the work can be performed with the door remaining in place, allowing the entrance to remain functional and lockable during the project.
COLOR AND GRAIN RECONCILIATION
- Custom stain colors developed for individual boards, components, or wood species within the same entryway
- Toning used to moderate light, dark, off-color, weathered, or otherwise visually inconsistent areas
- Shading and translucent glazing used to build depth while retaining visible wood character
- Faux wood-grain techniques used where natural grain is deficient or where repaired and replacement material requires visual integration
- Color-theory principles applied to reconcile mixed woods and differing substrate responses after stripping
- Decorative-finishing methods used to avoid reliance on excessively heavy or opaque stain treatments
- Project-specific sampling, mixing, blending, and layering undertaken as conditions are revealed during refinishing
OWNER’S STATEMENT TO HISTORICPRESERVATION.COM
In describing what most distinguishes his work to HistoricPreservation.com’s Principal Curator, Lance Daniel Aulffo explained: “About 70% of the doors I work on have some kind of light, dark, off-color section or just lack of grain or are just undesirable. In extreme cases, an entryway can be constructed of several different woods. When I strip an entryway down and find this, I must dig deep into my bag of tricks, using my refinishing and decorative background skills plus a splash of color theory to recreate the integrity of the entryway. I use my many years of experience to tone, shade, and even add faux wood grain to uniform entryways as much as possible.”
